GIVING PLASTIC A VOICE THROUGH THE LIGHT

LSP 01 is the first luminaire born from the ambitious Lights & Shadows of Plastic project, which aims to reuse plastic “trash” (bottles) to create a wide series of luminaires that come to life as light sculptures. Like all the luminaires in this series, LSP 01 has the extraordinary goal of sending an ethical and socially responsible message through the lights and shadows it is able to emit.

The bottles that make up LSP 01 have been meticulously selected so that their folds and undulations fit together perfectly as if they were pieces of a puzzle. And they are joined by the “threaded union” process, which consists of creating micro-holes in strategic parts of each bottle in order to insert a transparent thread of 0.04mm into them, which ties the bottles together (via knots) until they appear as a single piece.

All manufacturing processes for the LSP 01 have been carried out by hand. From compressing the bottles and cutting them, joining all the bottles with transparent threads, making micro holes in the plastic, to attaching the heat sinks to each LED, among other steps.

The LSP 01 luminaire is designed so that the “plastic waste” that makes up its body can fulfill the primary function of endowing the lights and shadows with a transformative message, which is exposed to the public as a painting that seeks to capture attention and speak to you through its moving lights and shadows, making visible the beauty that hides behind this somber reality.

The unique soul of this luminaire “manifests” through the inherent duality that LSP 01 has, because it suggests highlighting all the positive elements intrinsic to plastic and making them visible in an extraordinary way through light. But inevitably, the light is always followed by its shadows, and these want to show us the darkest and most gloomy part that plastic has, but… only because of the human being. And therefore, what is essentially shown to be good, becomes something bad and therefore our enemy.

The body of LSP 01 becomes a visual metaphor for the beauty that lies hidden behind the somber reality of plastic. With each movement of light and shadow, the LSP 01 luminaire conveys a powerful message: that waste can be transformed into something beautiful and useful. This message is more important than ever, as plastic is one of the main pollutants of the planet in today’s world.

The discarded bottles that at first glance seem worthless, together, will be part of something much bigger within LSP 01, unleashing their ability to mold and sculpt light in an exceptional way. Showing us that something ‘without an apparent utility’ can be reborn again into something extraordinary.

The LSP 01 luminaire showcases unparalleled innovation through its projection of lights and shadows, all powered by a waste material that was once overlooked – compressed plastic bottles. The luminaire captures the unique essence of plastic and transcends it into a form of art, as if it were a painting that comes to life and speaks to you through different hues and tonalities of light, creating a visually attractive and hypnotic experience.

However, the name also includes the word “SHADOWS,” which points to the dark side of plastic use. These shadows highlight the negative effects that plastic can have if not used prudently or if not recycled properly. By drawing attention to these shadows, LSP 01 encourages us to be responsible guardians of the environment and to use plastic carefully to minimize the environmental impact of plastic waste.
